Pitlochry Scotland

Pitlochry

Located in Perthshire, Pitlochry is a town surrounded by beauty and steeped in history. You will find that the food is locally sourced and offers you a true taste of this beautiful part of the world. Pitlochry is very much a holiday destination and offers something for the visitor all year round. The town has been a popular holiday destination for more than 150 years and has welcomed many guests including Queen Victoria, as such the people that live and work here are more than welcoming, able to offer advice and information on all of the things to see and do in the area. This is a place where you can enjoy some of the best of the scenery that Scotland has to offer, and it makes the perfect base for touring the surrounding area. The beautiful city of Edinburgh is just over an hour away and the historic town of St Andrews can be reached in an hour and a half. Head north and in the same amount of time you could be on the banks of Loch Ness.

Things To Do

Pitlochry is one of the many gateways to the Scottish Highlands and is home to the smallest distillery in Scotland. The town is a regular stopping point for those travelling up into the Highlands proper. It is nestled in a beautiful location with the River Tummel on one side and the imposing mass of Ben Vrackie at its back. During autumn the different colours that dress the landscape here are something to behold. This is an area where the outdoor environment deserves to be enjoyed, and there are a number of walking routes that can be followed which allow you to take in the wonderful scenery.

If a planned walking route does not appeal, take a walk around the Explorers Garden instead where you will find a celebration of plants all of which were brought back to the area from overseas. One unusual attraction here is the Pitlochry Power Station and its dam, this is because the dam has been designed to include a salmon ladder which allows the fish to swim upstream and into Loch Fascally.

Food and Drink

The Scottish salmon makes it onto the menu of the majority of dining establishments in the area, where it joins the ranks of the rest of the top quality, locally sourced foods. No matter where you choose to eat here you can be sure that you will be served quality ingredients produced by the region. With the town being home to the smallest distillery in Scotland it makes sense that you should visit and take a distillery tour to enjoy the other taste of the region in the form of a wee dram of whiskey. After all, no visit to this part of the world would be complete without tasting everything it has to offer, and perhaps taking a little bit of something special back home with you as a memento of your time in this beautiful place.
